The New Samaritan Baptist Church Scholarship Ministry has awarded scholarships to some of the most talented and intelligent minds of our generation. Christoph Jenkins, the Founder/CEO of Fighting Cancer With Poetry is a proud recipient of several of their scholarships affording him the ability to attend and graduate from Norfolk State University. 

These are going to be EPIC events because we will not just be fighting cancer but we will be helping to send students to college!

Poets

Kasaun Wilson (Host)

A stand-up comedian, actor, director, Mr. Kasaun Wilson is one of the brightest young stars in the country today. Originally from Jersey City, NJ, Kasaun has been touring theaters, churches, and colleges all over the country. From the Gotham Comedy Club in NY, The Ohio State University, to the Comedy Union in Los Angeles, and even his alma mater Howard University in Washington, D.C., the word about Mr. Kasaun Wilson is getting out. He has opened for nationally touring acts such as Donnell Rawlings (Chappelle's Show, MTV's Guy Court), Ralph Harris (Last Comic Standing), Greg Proops (Whose Line is it Anyway) and many, many others. Look out for Mr. Kasaun Wilson.

Dominic Corban Weeks

Dominic is a native of Washington, D.C. While he was in college, he found a passion for music and theatre. Since college, he has used his God-given talents to perform at every opportunity. To date, Dominic has written hundreds of songs, has performed spoken word for his church and for other public engagements. Currently, he is working on the portrayal of Justin Izlar, a skilled poet that battled with Sarcoma Cancer as well as on a hip hop album.

Karega Bailey

Karega is a native of Sacramento, California.  He is a successful product of collective contributions from the Sacramento community. Mentoring services of The 100 Black Men of America, Inc (Sacramento) and the family services offered by the Center for Fathers & Families provided Mr. Bailey with the support and direction needed to succeed amidst the socioeconomic stressors.

Christopher Jones

Born in Baltimore City, Maryland, Christopher Jones often used writing as a coping mechanism during his turbulent childhood. His difficulties included a mother with a substance abuse problem compounded by his father serving a life sentence in prison. He had only discovered his talent for spoken word a few years ago after joining L.I.F.E. Church Ministries in Brooklyn, MD. God has continued to mature his gift. He aspires to speak to the masses through his spoken word ministry and ultimately reach out to the world through his book entitled “Grappling with Life”. He is a graduate of Morgan State University, proud husband of Edwina and father of two beautiful girls (Essence and Sianni) and a son (Chris Jr.). Christopher has spoken at various events including church retreats, graduations, weddings, conferences, festivals and award ceremonies.

Orville The Poet

A young poet on the rise in the Washington, D. C. area.  Orville's poems speak a vivid truth about the struggles of being an artist, and staying constant and true to oneself.  Orville the Poet speaks poetry for the voiceless to address the issues no others will speak of, and to release pent up emotions with his pen. Poetry has become his breath of fresh air, his meditation, his therapy. His compelling words have been shared on several stages, in front of numerous audiences.  Orville has been the featured poet at spoken word venues such as Busboys & Poets, Messiah & Friends, Indulj, Mood Lounge, and Jus Wine Cheese & Poetry.

Damien Seay
Damo is from Annapolis, MD. He started doing creative writing, such as songs, rhymes and poems when he was about 10 years old. After accepting Christ at the age of 19, Damien knew that writing was an ability that God had given him and that he wanted to use it for God's glory. Now having been connected with TrueVoices DC he is able to sharpen his craft to the glory of the Father.

Kezia Snipe

Kezia is a native of Memphis, TN.  She began writing at the age of 7 and as she matured, she yielded her talent and gift back to God in her poetry.  She has released a book and 2 full length spoken word albums with a third in the works.  She currently serves in the community as a child advocate in Baltimore city, and is co-leader of TrueVoices  DC.

Nathan Hodge
Nathan is 21. He is a husband, father & poet! He’s also an ex alcoholic, ex pot-head and ex fornicator. The day God took away these things from him was the day he fell in love with JESUS & now uses every gift & passion towards advancing His kingdom! His life goal is to live a life that inspires a generation.

Janai Marshall

Janai is a native DC resident and a member of TrueVoices DC.  She began writing at the age of eight, and has been publicly sharing poetry since 1999.  However, in 2003 the focus of her writing shifted from awareness of societal issues to now, glorifying the God who can address them.  A graduate of Hampton University, she currently is completing her Masters in Counseling, and supports families residing in DC public housing.

Taylor Davis

Taylor is a senior at Howard University and was born and raised in Memphis, TN.  She began writing at the age of 8, but decided to openly use her gift and love for spoken word at 18.  Since then, she has ministered at many events and programs in the DMV area.  Currently, she is a member of the Christian spoken word group, TrueVoices DC. Her mission is simple: tell the world about God's grace.

Crystal Brandon

Crystal began writing poetry in middle school and performing in high school as a member of the school's spoken word troupe, "Lyrikal Storm." She later attended the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) where she received her salvation and began to grow in her walk with Christ. She graduated Summa Cum Laude 2010. She is currently pursuing a career as an entrepreneur, working full time as an auditor, studying to become a certified public accountant (CPA), and ministering at various venues.
